Sunday, May 10, 2009 Finding the Salmon of My Dreams I don’t go eating just ANY salmon I find. Heck, I don’t go dating just ANY guy either! In fact, I realized there are many similarities between salmon and men. After researching for this blog post, I think I understand both a little bit better than before! Let’s start with The Dating Game. Bachelor #1 is Johnny Farm-Raised. Bachelor #2 is a Adam Wild. JOHNNY FARM-RAISED Johnny doesn’t get out much. (Farm-raised salmon are kept in tanks with minimal room to swim) Sure, he has friends, but it’s not a fun scene. (They are pumped with antibiotics, hormones, and even eat each other’s waste) He has some good traits, but the bad traits seem to outweigh those. (It’s still high in omega-3s and protein, but there’s more omega-6, which shifts the delicate balance in the wrong direction) Johnny has even been known to kick people while their down. (Besides a lower nutritional value, farm-raised salmon are higher in toxicities like PCBs and dioxin.) Is that a beer belly I see? (Farm-raised are higher in overall fat, and PCB is stored in fat.) He is buff, since all he drinks are protein shakes. (Although farm-raised are bigger than their counterpart, protein pellets are all that they are fed) He wears pink polos, but it just looks like he’s trying too hard. (Farm-raised salmon are dyed pink because they don’t have the same diet that makes wild salmon naturally pink in color) Johnny gets easily influenced by his friends and can be a real jerk in front of them (Farmed salmon spread disease to the wild salmon who are trying to survive. The contribute to the decline in wild salmon) He’s just like every other not-good-enough-guy you’ve ever met (Farm-raised make up 80% of the salmon found in the stores. That’s a lot of Mr. Wrongs.) ADAM WILD Adam likes adventure and hard work. He’d swim across the Atlantic ocean and back just for you! (Wild salmon swim across the ocean and then return back to where they began, eating up some pretty nutritious krill oil along the way) He, unlike Johnny, looks awesome in the pink polo because he is confident about his looks (Wild salmon naturally have a pink color from their diet) He makes you feel beautiful on the inside and out. (DHA and EPA omega-3 fat will promote beauty both inside and out. This fat is what helps build every cell in your body. Also, it decreases inflammation, which could help in achieving clear skin) Johnny compliments you on how smart and intelligent you are. (Again, with the omega-3s! Your brain is 60% structural fat. Omega-3s take their spot in the cell membrane and are DA BOMB when it comes to being the cell gatekeeper. It’s fluid and flexible and makes it easy to get nutrients IN and waste OUT.) He makes you really, really happy!! (Numerous studies have connected omega-3 consumption to improved mental health. Some psychiatrists find that salmon may help relieve depression) Adam has a great job, well-established, and stable. (Almost all canned salmon is wild. It’s shelf-stable! Get it?) He’s hard to find, but a great “catch” (Wild salmon make up only 20% of the fish available in the U.S—I told you salmon and men were similar!! No worries, though. There are plenty of fish in the sea!) Nutritionista Rule #4: Wild Salmon (EPA/DHA omega-3s) can put you in good mood, make you smarter, make your skin look better, prevent chronic diseases, and improve your overall health! Now where can I find a man that can do all of that?? (I think the answer is…In my DREAMS!!)
